The Only Stop Light in Woodson County! Or Red Light, Green Light!

Here in Piqua we are a very small town…but that doesn’t mean we are lacking in amenities! The only stop light in the county resides here in Piqua. Ironically most people do not know it is even here. The Piqua Farmer’s Coop Elevator had one installed last fall during the fall harvest season. You see, most of our farmers now use Semi -tractor trucks to haul the grain into the elevator and this has become a safety issue for the guys working the scales and grain probe. For those of you that are not farmers I will explain why it is important to get the trucks stopped!
I will say that harvest is a sight to see and I would suggest to anyone that you take time to come to Piqua and sit at the Farm Store and watch. Better yet, find a local farmer willing to let you spend a day with them from start to finish. But, I digress! The trucks line up early sometimes before the elevator is open. Our elevator holds around a million and one half bushels of grain and that is not enough hold all the grain that comes in during fall harvest. There will be a mixture of soybeans, milo or grain sorghum, and corn. The farmers haul it in Semi-trucks and since we no longer have a train, the independent truckers are hired to haul it out to the entity that has bought the grain. The grain has to be a certain percentage of moisture before the elevator can take the grain or it will get out of condition if they take it. This process is very involved and not going into all the details. But, now you can see why it so important that the grain be checked for moisture as it is brought in to the elevator. Which brings me back to why the light was installed…well, the farmers tend to be in a hurry to get back to field. They come in to the elevator scales and can at times be impatient to return to the field. As they (the farmers) approach the scales to be weighed they are also having the grain probed for the moisture content. So, the red light goes on and that brings to the guys & gals attention to come to a complete stop! As soon as the probe is finished, the green light goes on and they know the probe is finished and they can be on their way to dump the grain in one of the pits.  So, now you know where and why we have the only stop light in Woodson County!
